“I’m very pleased that twenty representatives from different
clubs made the trip to Bunbury for the Clubs WA
South-West regional meeting. The fantastic turnout is a credit to our
valued volunteers and their devotion to our collective community.” – Peter
Seaman Executive Director
The overwhelming support
behind Clubs WA and its activity as expressed by delegates at the recent
South-West regional meeting was welcomed and most gratifying. The push
from regional clubs towards the Liquor
Control Act reform was strong with current and relevant issues being addressed.
South West clubs
now have a crucial understanding about the important role tourism and functions
play in the local and broader communities within regional West Australia. The meeting
highlighted that all clubs are keen to be further involved in the Fair Go for Clubs campaign, however they are left frustrated by the current restrictive liquor laws
that severely limit club activity within their region.
Tourists are an
essential part to Western Australia’s thriving and growing South-West region.
Allowing them to be temporary club members of a local club is beneficial to the
individual and a value for the community.
Clubs also offer
safer and more secure environments in which to host functions. Allowing more
flexible guidelines for clubs to conduct community driven function will enable
more social connectivity with the community.
John Gelmi from Bunbury RSL reminded fellow clubs that
tidying up laws will reflect the demands the community expects of clubs, like
RSL. Other delegates were bemused that WA liquor laws did not fit with a
national model that allows tourist and function activity without any
restrictions in every other state and territory of Australia.
Liquor reform is a fundamental step towards the future
wellbeing of clubs in Western Australia and essential to sustaining community
involvement.
