Jaymee Naughton Selected To Walk The Kokoda Track Leadership Challenge

16 year old Jaymee Naughton from Belmont has been selected to lead the kokoda track challenge. Jaymee will represent Western Australia in the program that offers young people between the ages of 16 and 22 the opportunity to walk the Kokoda Track over ten days between 26th September and the 7th October 2011.

Jaymee is an outstanding, passionate young student who currently volunteers for the Good Samaritans and also for her local kayaking club. She is also a part of the Perth Young Christian Students Social Justice Group. Jaymee says “We promote awareness in the community about current issues such as fair trade, bullying, immigrants and racial discrimination”.

Jaymee  says that her main reasons for wanting to go to kokoda is to “experience the journey of the Australian soldiers” She also explains that she loves history and has learnt a lot from her pop who collected and restored military vehicles to transport diggers of the Royal marines that could no longer march in the ANZAC Day parade. Walking the kokoda track would be the ultimate tribute to the soldiers that lost their lives” Jaymee says.

The intention of the Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge is to identify young people within the Western Australian community who are potential leaders, and who have an ability to both inspire and educate other young people within their local communities.

Clubs WA will provide flights, accommodation, meals, camping equipment, hiking boots and track permits and wishes Jaymee all the best for the Kokoda Track Leadership  Challenge .

Kokoda Youth Leadership Clubs Challenge

The Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge is an annual program administered by ClubsAustralia and Clubs WA which offers young people between the age of 16 and 22 the opportunity to walk the Kokoda Track.

The program was originally developed by the NSW RSL & Services Clubs Association 5 years ago, and involved NSW RSL clubs sending a young person from their local community to walk the Track.

Expenses covered by Clubs WA include the cost of flying to Kokoda, as well as accommodation, food, camping equipment, boots and track permits. The intention of the Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge is to identify young people within the West Australian community who are potential leaders, and who have an ability to both inspire and educate other young people within their local communities. The program has now been adopted nationally, with state club associations in NSW, Victoria, the ACT and South Australia all funding the cost of at least one young person to walk the Kokoda Track.

Candidates are expected to walk the entire Kokoda Track, which at 155km is 59kms longer than the more popular eco-tourist track. Clubs WA believes that by walking the entire wartime track, young people have an opportunity to gain a greater understanding about a campaign that is rarely discussed in the classroom. More than 2,000 Australian soldiers are buried at the Bomana War Cemetery near Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. Each group visits the cemetery at the conclusion of their ten day trip, an experience that is as emotionally draining as the walk is physically.

Clubs WA have chosen 6 successful candidates, who will be interviewed over the coming weeks.
